Winchester

The former capital city of England and Hampshire’s county town, forever associated with King Alfred the Great and also with King Arthur whose “Round Table” can be still be seen in the Great Hall of Winchester Castle. While the Cathedral lacks Salisbury’s astonishing setting (or spire) there is a school of thought that on the inside at least, Winchester is the more beautiful. It contains the tomb of William II (William Rufus) the successor to his father, William the Conqueror, as King of England.
